German Child Maintenance Calculator 2026

Enter the paying parent's income and the children. The result appears instantly.

Income after tax and social security. Please subtract debts or other deductions yourself.

For example commuting costs. Many courts allow 5% of net income without proof, often capped at €150. In North Rhine-Westphalia, Bremen and Schleswig-Holstein only proven costs count.

This sets your protected minimum (Selbstbehalt): €1,450 if employed, otherwise €1,200.

0 to 17 years. Adult children (18 to 20) only if they live with a parent and attend school.

Advanced: adjust the income group

The table assumes two people are owed maintenance. With more or fewer, a court may use a lower or higher group. There is no fixed rule for this. If unsure, leave the setting unchanged.

How the calculator works

The Düsseldorfer Tabelle places the adjusted net income into one of 15 income groups. Each group gives a child's need for four age bands. Child benefit is then deducted: half for minors, the full amount for adult children. What remains is the amount payable.

Rules

Important rules and special cases

  1. 01

The table is a guideline, not a law

The Higher Regional Courts use the Düsseldorfer Tabelle as a benchmark. A court can deviate in an individual case. This calculator therefore shows an estimate.

  2. 02

    Net income and work-related costs

The calculation uses adjusted net income. Work-related costs, such as commuting, can reduce it. Whether a 5% flat rate applies without proof depends on the court: in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bremen and Schleswig-Holstein only proven costs are accepted, while other districts, for example Dresden, Frankfurt or Bavaria, allow the flat rate. The calculator therefore deducts nothing automatically. Enter your costs yourself.

  3. 03

Child benefit reduces the amount payable

Under section 1612b of the German Civil Code (BGB), child benefit is credited against the need: half for minors, in full for adult children. Child benefit is €259 per child per month, so half is €129.50.

  4. 04

The control amount protects your income

Each group names an amount that should be left to you after maintenance. If it would be undercut, the calculator applies the next lower group where it is kept.

  5. 05

When income is not enough (Mangelfall)

Your protected minimum (Selbstbehalt) is €1,450 if employed and €1,200 if not. If income beyond that does not cover all claims, the rest is shared between the children in proportion to their claims.

  6. 06

More or fewer people owed maintenance

The table assumes two people. With more or fewer, a court may choose a lower or higher group. There is no fixed rule, so the adjustment is an explicit setting in the calculator and is off by default.

This calculator gives an estimate based on the Düsseldorfer Tabelle and is not legal advice. Courts deviate in individual cases, and the guidelines of the Higher Regional Courts differ in details. Not included: additional needs (Mehrbedarf), special needs (Sonderbedarf), the child's own income, spousal maintenance, adult children with their own household and extended contact arrangements. For important decisions, consult a family law specialist or the youth welfare office (Jugendamt).

FAQ

Questions and answers on child maintenance

What is the Düsseldorfer Tabelle?

A guideline that states a child's maintenance need based on the paying parent's income and the child's age. It has no force of law, but according to the Higher Regional Court Düsseldorf it is applied by all Higher Regional Courts.

Which income do I enter?

Your monthly net income after tax and social security. Enter work-related costs in their own field. Subtract debts or other obligations yourself first, as the calculator does not know them.

Is child benefit credited?

Yes. For minors, half of the child benefit is deducted from the table amount, for adult children the full amount. In 2026 child benefit is €259 per child.

What is the Selbstbehalt?

The minimum that must be left to you: €1,450 if employed, €1,200 if not. If your income does not cover both the Selbstbehalt and maintenance, it is a shortfall case (Mangelfall).

Is it the same across Germany?

The table is. The guidelines of the individual Higher Regional Courts handle details differently, for example whether a 5% flat rate for work-related costs is accepted without proof. That is why the costs field stays a separate input.

What changes next year?

The Düsseldorfer Tabelle is updated regularly, usually on 1 January. The calculator always states the date of the table it uses. For important decisions, check whether a newer table applies.
