Austria Notice Period: Work Out the Length and the End Date
Choose who gives notice and enter the start date and the day notice is received. The result appears straight away.
What counts is the day the notice reaches the other side, not the date on the letter.
Without an agreement the employer can only end employment at the end of a quarter. The contract can instead provide for the 15th or the last day of a calendar month.
During an agreed probationary period either side can end employment at any time, with no notice period and no fixed date.

|---|---|
| under 2 years | 6 weeks |
| from 2 years | 2 months |
| from 5 years | 3 months |
| from 15 years | 4 months |

How the calculator works
The rules behind the result
- 01
Notice period and termination date are two things
The notice period is the time between receiving the notice and the end. The termination date is the earliest day employment may end. The calculator counts off the period first and then moves forward to the next permitted date.
- 02
When the employer gives notice
The period is six weeks and rises to two months after the second completed year, three after the fifth, four after the fifteenth and five after the twenty-fifth. Without another agreement, employment ends at the end of a calendar quarter: 31 March, 30 June, 30 September or 31 December.
- 03
Date on the 15th or the last day of a month
The notice period cannot be shorter than the statutory length. Employer and employee can, however, agree that it ends on the 15th or on the last day of a calendar month. Choose the agreed date in the calculator.
- 04
When the employee gives notice
Without a more favourable agreement, one month's notice to the last day of a calendar month applies. The contract can provide for up to six months. The employer's notice period then cannot be shorter than the one agreed for the employee.
- 05
Manual workers and salaried employees
Since the rules were aligned, the same periods and dates apply to manual workers and salaried employees. The rule is in § 1159 ABGB and, with the same content, in § 20 AngG.
- 06
Probationary period
If the first month is agreed as a probationary period, either side can end employment at any time during that month (§ 1158 para. 2 ABGB). The calculator then shows the day of notice as the end.
- 07
Collective agreements and industries
Collective agreements and individual contracts can be more favourable for employees. Seasonal industries had special rules, and the legal position on them changed in 2026. The calculator does not take collective agreements into account. Check your collective agreement or ask the Chamber of Labour.
